More questions raised in State GOP money transfer scheme

By DOUG IBENDAHL • May 10, 2012

Syndicated political columnist Bernard Schoenburg has an excellent expansion this week on the story we broke last month about a money transfer scheme involving the Illinois Republican Party.

Schoenburg’s must read column is here.

Schoenburg includes a quote from Kent Redfield, professor emeritus of political science at the University of Illinois Springfield, who reviewed the cash flows and concluded it looks like “an end run around contribution limits.”

It looks to me like a very serious issue under Illinois law. But I’m not a prosecutor. If and when a check was put in an envelope and placed in the mail, there might also be a federal issue. But again, that’s for others to decide.

What we do know is it all looks terrible. When our officials try to outdo the Democrats on shady deals, we’ve got a serious problem.

Doug Ibendahl is a Chicago Attorney and a former General Counsel of the Illinois Republican Party.
