RRSTAR: ‘Mohammed’ joke not funny; Dave Syverson owes apology

We don’t know what is more disturbing: That state Sen. Dave Syverson posted an insensitive joke to his Facebook account or that so many commenters on Facebook and our website thought it was funny and cheered him on.

As Register Star Political Editor Chuck Sweeny first reported on his rrstar.com blog last week, Syverson posted a joke titled “Father Daughter Talk.” It involved a father whose daughter wanted him to “cancel my allowance, rent my room out, throw all my clothes out, take my TV, iPhone, iPod and my laptop. Please take all of my jewelry. Then sell my car, take my house key. And then write me out of your will.”

“Well,” the joke continued, “She didn’t put it quite like that … She actually said, ‘Dad, this is my new boyfriend, Mohammed from Iran.’”

We wish we could tell you the senator’s bad judgment call unleased a torrent of recriminations. Not exactly.
