The Peoria Journal Star; St. Louis Post Dispatch; State Journal-Register; and the Alton Telegraph all had stories within the last 24 hours on the status of the “Fair Map” petition drive.
Organizers are apparently struggling to get the 288,000 valid petition signatures needed by May 3rd.
One of the leading members of the coalition supporting the Fair Map is the Illinois League of Women Voters. All indications are that those ladies are working their tails off on this project.
But what about another member of the pro-Fair Map coalition - specifically Republican House Minority Leader Tom Cross?
Cross talks about Fair Map. He attends the press conferences. He’ll bash the counter-plan being pushed by the Democrats.
But has Tom Cross ever gone out with the volunteers to help gather signatures for the Fair Map amendment? The press should really ask him.
Assuming the petitions are filed, how many pages will bear Cross’ signature as circulator?
Most Republicans who have thought about the issue probably agree that Fair Map would be an improvement in the way legislative districts are drawn.
But most Republicans won’t be chumps either. Grunt work like gathering petitions can’t just be for the taxpayers who pay Tom Cross’ salary. Republicans want leaders who lead by example.
