About Washington County. Washington County was formed in 1818 out of St. Clair County. Its county seat is Nashville, Illinois.

Despite its relative proximity to the Illinois suburbs of St. Louis, Missouri, Washington County is not considered part of the St. Louis metropolitan area, also known as the Metro-East.

Washington County was named for George Washington, a Revolutionary General, statesman, and the first President of the newly independent United States (1789-1797). He was also Commander in Chief of the American forces during the Revolution (1775–1783) and President of the second Constitutional Convention. Learn More
