About Madison County. Madison County was established on September 14, 1812. It was formed out of Randolph and St. Clair Counties. At the time of its formation, Madison County included all of the modern State of Illinois north of St. Louis, about three-fourths of the Territory. Its county seat is Edwardsville, Illinois.

Madison County is named for James Madison, statesman and fourth President of the United States (1809-1817). He played a leading role in the Constitutional Convention (1787) and is considered one of the Founding Fathers. Learn More
