About Gallatin County. The County was organized in 1812, having been formed from Randolph County. Its county seat is Shawneetown, Illinois.

Gallatin County was named for Albert Gallatin, who was Secretary of the Treasury at the time. The Shawneetown Bank was the only bank in Illinois back then. In 1795, Gallatin was elected to the House of Representatives and served in the fourth through sixth Congresses, becoming House Majority Leader. He was also a founder of New York University.
