NBC 5 Chicago political reporter Mary Ann Ahern took Mark Kirk to task today for backtracking on an earlier pledge to turn President Obama into a “one-termer” over the new health care law. Ahern correctly notes that Kirk seems to be backing off from the repeal rhetoric he was strongly voicing just two weeks ago.
It’s hard to see how weakening his stance on Obamacare will help Kirk with conservative Republicans or with Independents.
But the big thing left out of Ahern’s report is Kirk’s doubletalk on taxes. Kirk’s new approach on Obamacare is to say he just wants citizens to know about the new taxes involved. “I’m concerned about the double whammy with governor’s tax planned,” Kirk said.
That’s all well and good. But any story that has Mark Kirk crying crocodile tears over taxes should always note that he was one of only eight Republican Congressmen to vote last year for the most massive tax increase in American history (Cap & Trade).
