SB35 still alive, gains more support

By CATHY SANTOS • June 7, 2011

Illinois House Republicans chose to end the Spring Session last week in Springfield without voting on a major reform bill that restores real democracy and accountability to the Illinois Republican Party.

The bill, SB35, would give every Republican the right to directly elect the members of the Illinois Republican Party’s senior governing board (officially called the State Central Committee).

SB35 passed the Illinois Senate by unanimous vote in April.

The good news is SB35 is still very much alive. The next opportunity for the bill’s passage in the House will be during the Fall Veto Session to be held on October 25, 26, and 27, and November 8, 9, and 10.

And there is more positive news. In the final hours of session, State Representative Mike Fortner added his name to the list of SB35 Co-Sponsors. He joins fellow Republican lawmakers Bob Pritchard, Mike Connelly and Jason Barickman.

Also, Republican State Representative Mike Tryon has advised constituents that he will be a YES vote if SB35 is called in the House. Tryon had been a past opponent of the reform.

We encourage every Republican voter to continue to urge the State Representatives – both Republicans and Democrats - to support passage of SB35. You’ll find contact information for all the House members HERE.

You’re likely to see state lawmakers out in force this summer promoting themselves in anticipation of the next election. Let them know if they expect your vote, you expect their YES vote on SB35.
